Self-talk
Self-talk is learning to communicate with and control the inner voice within us all. Self-talk affects your well-being and self-image. As conscious beings, this constant communication going on in our minds is closely tied to our view of ourselves, even though most people arenât really aware of that communication or of its implications.
The voice within you is based on all of the things you were told as a child. If you grew up in a home full of love and caring, and you were supported in your endeavors as you became an adult, your inner voice reflects that loving confidence. But if your home was not supportive, or dysfunctional, you probably need to re-evaluate what that inner voice is telling you.
If you grew up with a very low sense of self-worth, your inner voice may be adding to that feeling because your FM prevents you from fulfilling your roles in life, whether as spouse, parent, money-earner, or all of these. If pain prevents you from working, your feelings of uselessness may be confirmed.
A psychologist can help you cope with your negative self-talk, or you may simply need to become aware of what you are saying to yourself. You need to be able to take an honest look at yourself to determine whether you are truly doing the best that you can under the circumstances. If you are doing your best, then you need to accept that. If you find that youâre not doing as well as you could, then you might find that a program of positive self-talk will help.
Motivational speakers advise their listeners to repeat a positive sentence or two a number of times during the day. It canât hurt to develop one or two of your own. Good examples might be, âI know that I am doing the best I can,â or âI will make two contacts with someone outside my home today.â
Of course, you must be honest with yourself. You must really be trying to do the best you can. Self-honesty is sometimes difficult and painful. But it is always necessary. You must believe that you are wholeheartedly trying to live and work in spite of the pain. Only you can really know whether you are surrendering to the pain or living your life in spite of it.
